Novak Druce Connolly Bove + Quigg Expands with Philadelphia Office

Thursday, July 31, 2014

Novak Druce Connolly Bove + Quigg LLP is pleased to announce that veteran IP attorney Alfred W. Zaher is joining the firm from Blank Rome LLP to lead the IP firm’s expansion into the Philadelphia market, making it the Novak Druce’s ninth office. Mr. Zaher, along with new hire Dr. Shawn Shiqing Li, will work closely with the firm’s existing offices in Boston, Washington D.C. and Wilmington, Del. to expand Novak Druce’s footprint along the East Coast.

“The Philadelphia market has been of interest to us for some time,” said Gregory Novak, CEO and Managing Partner of the firm. “Philadelphia is a hub of leading biotech and medical innovation that compliments our national practices in these areas, including our growing FDA practice. Attracting Alfred Zaher and his team is the first of what we hope will be many groups to join our Philadelphia office. Our doors are open for clients and high quality individuals or groups that would like to join us and be part of a new state-of-the-art national IP practice.”

The Philadelphia office will also bolster the firm’s Asia Pacific Practice. Headed by partner On Lu, Novak Druce’s Asia Pacific Practice represents U.S. and multinational companies in China and works closely with Chinese government officials to curb infringement and secure patent and trademark protection in China. For Mr. Zaher, who already has a well-established Chinese practice, Novak Druce was a natural fit.

“Like Novak Druce, I have developed contacts with the highest levels of the Chinese government charged with overseeing IP rights, the U.S. embassy in China and most of the top law firms in China,” Mr. Zaher said. “I also have developed a comprehensive, proactive approach to stopping unauthorized brand owners by opposing and cancelling their registrations with the Chinese Trademark Office, suing them in Chinese courts, and conducting raid actions to seize counterfeit goods.”

Mr. Zaher concentrates his practice on patent, trademark and trade secret litigation, licensing and counseling. He has extensive experience representing clients before U.S. courts, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the U.S. Copyright Office and frequently counsels companies in the biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electronics and software sectors. Leveraging his close relationships with Chinese officials and law firms, he has a particular focus on helping clients manage their patent and trademark portfolios in China, including securing IP protection and prosecuting infringers in the Chinese court system.

Prior to entering law, Mr. Zaher was a research engineer with more than 10 years of technical experience at such organizations as The Boeing Company. He received his bachelor’s degree in engineering science from the City University of New York and attended graduate school for electrical engineering with a concentration in electromagnetics at Drexel University. He received his juris doctor from St. John’s University School of Law.

Dr. Li is a partner at Novak Druce who concentrates his practice on comprehensive IP protection strategies, drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications, prosecuting patent reexaminations, and negotiating and preparing complex licenses and related agreements. With a background in molecular biology, he frequently provides counsel to clients in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. He also counsels U.S. and multinational clients in IP protection matters in China, including patent, trademark and trade secret enforcement actions as well as cross-border technology transfers and joint ventures. Dr. Li received his Bachelor of Science from Peking University in China and his Master of Science and doctorate from New York University School of Medicine. He received his J.D. from Temple University Beasley School of Law.
