Mayer Brown Partner Sharon Israel Named President of the American Intellectual Property Law Association

Thursday, October 30, 2014

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced that Houston Intellectual Property partner Sharon Israel was named president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) at its annual meeting.

In more than 20 years as an AIPLA member, Ms. Israel has served on the board of directors, as a member of the executive committee and as chair or vice-chair of seven committees. During her one-year term as president, Ms. Israel will focus her priorities on membership outreach and advocacy initiatives, including making AIPLA more accessible to its members locally and helping members stay informed about legislative and regulatory changes in the intellectual property arena.

“These are tumultuous days for IP professionals, and we need to provide guidance to our members on important policy issues, as we help to shape a strong and balanced IP system that continues to promote innovation,” she said.

At Mayer Brown, Ms. Israel focuses her practice on patent litigation, opinion work, and client counseling. She has acted as counsel in intellectual property cases before district and appellate courts, the International Trade Commission, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Ms. Israel has litigated patents relating to a variety of technologies, from cellular communications systems to oilfield equipment to chemical compositions and medical devices. Adding a practical focus to her IP practice, she was an engineer with General Electric Company before entering law school.

AIPLA is a national bar association comprised of approximately 15,000 members, primarily lawyers in private and corporate practice, in government service and in the academic community. AIPLA represents individuals, companies and institutions involved directly or indirectly in the practice of patent, trademark, copyright and unfair competition law, as well as other fields of law affecting intellectual property.
